Sourced in provincial France our Antique and Vintage Breadboards immediately conjure up many associations … how about long lunches in some sun dappled country house in Provence with a selection of local delicacies served on a perfect breadboard platter? Well we can all dream can’t we?!

Daydreams aside, these Breadboards really are the perfect platter to entertain in the most elegant and relaxed fashion.

Perfect for simple cheese platters (or the humble slice of jam toast!) but also suited to more formal affairs where they can be used as a beautiful and picturesque platter for charcuterie, tapas, hors d’oeuvres and roast meats.

Made from a beautiful range of European hardwood timbers such as oak, maple, pine and walnut and bearing all the signs of their age such as knife marks, darkening spots where they have been used and worn grooves and indents. These tell tale marks give these breadboards a unique charm and character and also make it easy to spot imitation ones which are always a little too oiled and glossy for our liking.

The uniqueness of Antique and Vintage Breadboards obviously comes from their original use … and that use has everything to do with bread! The French are renowned not only for their love of bread but also for the many different types of loaves they bake. The different size and shape of these boards often depends on the shape and amount of bread that was being baked at the Boulangerie. So large oval shaped boards were used for cooking multiple loaves whilst narrow boards were for the much loved baguette.

Breadboards used in Boulangeries are usually rectangular with a smaller handle on the end. Interestingly, Breadboards sourced in the Alps and provincial regions were often just made by someone in the household and can be quite rustic in their appearance.

We personally love how every board has its own unique character and shape. So apart from being hugely useful in the kitchen for preparation and wonderful for entertaining it is also a great object for display.

They look great displayed in a collection, as a beautiful stand alone feature or hanging on the wall (why not mix it up completely and put an old portrait in too!) We are still amazed at how many different shapes, textures and patinas can be found.

There is something warm, reassuring and homely about having these beautiful breadboards displayed in the home and it doesn’t just have to be limited to the kitchen.

They look lovely in dining rooms and bathrooms, both as a practical surface and a decorative object.
